El valle de la muerte
En esta ciudad, los edificios no se plantan en la tierra: se deslizan. Las torres más altas cruzan las calles como gigantes de acero, cambiando de lugar cada día. En las esquinas, los rascacielos más viejos, oxidados, pelean por espacio, empujándose con estruendo.
Desde la ventana de su cubículo en movimiento, Cairo observaba el paisaje, siempre cambiante, siempre extraño, como la ciudad misma. Los más ricos elegían vistas a las nubes, mientras los pobres quedaban atrapados en sótanos de concreto móvil. Había oído rumores: edificios que colapsaban a propósito, aplastando a sus habitantes. Nadie los creía, hasta que vio cómo la torre de enfrente caía al vacío.
El movimiento cesó. Cairo entendió que su turno llegaba, y que pronto la ciudad lo devoraría.
Eucaristía
En la taberna del puerto, el hombre pidió vino y pan como si fueran sacramentos. Al terminar, se levantó sin mirar atrás, dejando la cuenta sin pagar. «Dios proveerá», murmuró. Al día siguiente, lo hallaron muerto en una zanja. Nadie lo reclamó, como si hubiera sido olvidado por el mismo cielo.
